New System Auto-Detects Cell Phone Driving

Highway Safety & Technology has created an automated detection system for busting people who TALK ON CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING. The patent-pending system, according to vague company propaganda, uses "electronic sensing equipment, which can either be pole-mounted or installed on a mobile unit." Products based on the technology will become available to U.S. police departments this fall.

Ya know it should be pretty easy to have this actually in the Phone. If Phone is moving faster than, say 20mph, turn off phone. Only problem, how would it know if you are driving rather than being a passenger? Or on a bus? Couldn't the GPS be used for this?

This is stupid. When I'm driving my family around town, my wife (sitting in the passenger seat) is the one who uses the cell phone. There is no way this technology is going to be able to tell the difference between the driver and the passenger using the cell phone.

Good points all -- how can they distinguish cell phones from the many other possible devices, and how can they tell who's using the phone?

Think this is worth writing a column about, or is this technology too early and obscure?

I think this technology is worth further investigation ONLY if the inventors can demonstrate how they can distinguish between the driver and the passengers. My guess is that if you ask them about it, they'll give some vague B.S. answer. At that point, I'd just stop talking to them and work on something else.

I drive an emergency vehicle on the California Freeways everyday, I have seen people with cell phone in one ear elbows on the steering wheel while putting on makeup on a regular basis.I can see in those cases the ban on cell phones while driving, But a reasonable solution is a Handsfree or wireless headset, and no Vanity mirrors on the driverside visor. You can enforce Handsfree's the same as the seatbelt laws is that so hard? Seems to me it would save more for the tax payers as well.
