Microsoft was VOTED TOP BRAND for the second year in a row in a Superbrands survey of consumers -- beating out Google, which came in at #3 and Apple, which didn't even make the top ten. This news will be incomprehensible to Apple fans.

It's just a comparative ranking of brand awareness. As such it has nothing to do with sales, brand equity, loyalty or anything that actually matters to a brand in the marketplace.
For added meaninglessness, Microsoft is at the top, but they operate a monopoly in at least one of their core markets. That means all bets are off on what their "brand" means in that context. In Soviet Russia, the brand chooses you.
