China 'Recycles' Toxic E-Waste As U.S. Jewelry

America's Toxic e-waste (discarded PCs and gadgets) is routinely sent to China for "processing" (poor people and their children take everything apart by hand at great risk to their health). Meanwhile, Americans can buy really cheap jewelry made in China. Guess what? The jewelry is OUR OWN POISON coming back at us. The discovery is yet another challenge for the communist party as it prepares for the 2008 Olympics and tries to put lipstick on the PIG THAT IS CHINA.

I am agree with you Mike on so many levels, hell, on all levels. But let's not forget that companies in the West (including the US) have done awful things with food supplies and were forced to change because of lawsuits. Companies that practive evil ways always have to be forced to change. Unfortuntatley in China, the communist government is more interested in making money that protecting its own citizens. What a serious shame for a country that considers itself the middle of the world.

I wish I could agree, but who produced and shipped the E-trash to China in the first place ? Handle your own trash and do it the right way or shut up !

No one forced that trash on China. They took it gladly.

It's not as if their ignorant about what's going on. They know they're handling poison. They simply don't care about killing their own people, or ours.

In the West we value the individual and all life, in China they simply don't. If you can't get that through your head, then stay out of the debate and let the adults talk.

China has become the epitome of the huge bureaucracy with no checks on it's behavior. They're like the Borg.

"government is more interested in making money that protecting its own citizens"

The same could be said of US policy on climate change - capitalist goals have led to the world's richest company failing to reach environmental targets, effectively endangering its population.

"China has become the epitome of the huge bureaucracy with no checks on it's behavior"

And who checks the behaviour of the US? Or does it need no checks?

Personally I think this is an ironic justice - being sold back your toxic crap to wear as jewellery. You can't blame the Chinese for doing this - it's a way to make a bit more money from what's probably a desperately poorly paid industry (computer breaking), and it's unlikely (note - I'm not saying impossible) that the US government would permit importing of goods that are still highly toxic.

"No one forced that trash on China. They took it gladly."

Their government takes American waste because it needs any sort of employment it can get for however many billions of people that live there in the face of unbelievable poverty. Do you think the mothers and children like those pictured are "glad" to break apart these computers and make crappy little bracelets? Or do you think they'd prefer to live like you, with your internet and Western privileges?
