Lieberman Wants UK-Style Big Brother Cams
"Democrat" Senator Joe Lieberman said today that the UK, which has about 1 camera for every 14 people in the country, serves as a GOOD MODEL FOR THE UNITED STATES. He said:
"The Brits have got something smart going in England, and it was part of why I believe they were able to so quickly apprehend suspects in the terrorist acts over the weekend, and that is they have cameras all over London and other of their major cities....I think it’s just common sense to do that here much more widely... And of course, we can do it without compromising anybody’s real privacy."This is how privacy is compromised. The Big Events scare everyone into accepting universal surveillance -- even though events in London this week prove cameras have no deterrent value -- then they use those cameras to crack down on minor infractions.

Mike, I hate to disagree with you on this. One of the reasons the Brits were able to arrest a number of these guys was the surveillance network, including license plate readers on highways. I agree that it shouldn't be used for minor infractions, and there should be oversight for how the recordings can be used, and when. I'm no Lieberman fan, but I was just in London, saw the cameras all around along with increased police presence in central London and at sports stadiums, and it actually made me feel more secure, rather than Big Brother-creeped out.
Terrorists don't care of they're arrested -- that doesn't stop them. They're working on "dirty bombs" that make major cities uninhabitable. Once they wipe out a city, we're going to find little joy in being able to arrest the perps.
One of their primary goals is to make free countries less free. The surveillance cameras aren't the solution to terrorism, they're symbols of our defeat.
