Lenovo steals Apple's iPhone design for "oPhone"

China leads the world in intellectual property theft, and Apple's IP is a juicy target. But usually rip-off counterfeits are produced by disreputable, back-room shops and illicit factories nobody's ever heard of. Now, it appears, that international computing giant Lenovo is getting into the act. The company's new Android handset is called the oPhone, and the software interface looks a LOT like the iPhone's.

Hmmm... I wonder where did Apple steal their product design from? Wait, when an American company does it, it's paying homage or borrowing, but when and Asian company does it...

I was hoping Android would provide something great to rival the iPhone. Not just another crop of half baked ideas and knock offs. It looks like Android is still a year or more away from being great.

Iphone was a trademarked named used by Cisco for their mobile phone before apple just took it.

apple's Iphone looks suspiciously familiar to LG's prada phone which came out first and won design awards before the iphone was even announced.

Yeah I'm with everyone else on this one. I doesn't really look all that much like an iphone. Actually I immediately thought of Android first when I saw it.

I believe that to have been a publicity stunt that worked to Apple's and Cisco's advantage.

Cisco currently do licence the trademark to Apple.. otherwise they'd have sued by now.

Yeah... Like Apple came up with this nice GUI without copying. Like I've never seen large black numbers or Yahoo Wigets before.
If Lenovo gives me a stylish phone with keypad and a flash port that accepts 16G with unlocked Android GUI then count me in. I'll be the first in line to buy.

Why is everyone so afraid of doing Multi Touch. Apple's pantent is a fraud and can't stad up in court. There's plenty of prier art. Anyone ever seen the Minority Report with Tom Cruise or lets go back even further to Jonny Mnemonic. Small companies started doing multi touch monitors long before apple stole the idea. You see these screens on most News Channels like CNN.

Lol, if the author using the word steal because Lenovo is using similar look icon in the UI, I would not surprise that when Japanese car manufacturers making their FTO, MR2 etc. copy DB9, Ferrari's shape.

Why do you insist on this nomenclature - "intellectual property theft"? It is a paradox, there can't be theft if you don't subtract anything from the other part. Besides, intellectual property is a generic term for different concepts. Specifically for patents and copyright, they are artificial rights conceded with one purpose in mind, incentivate innovation with the reward for the innovators. However, if it fails to meet this purpose or if it is deemed harmful for the society, it should not be there.

'Intellectual property' also does not give the same rights as (real) property.

That said, what is called 'intellectual property' is not property at all. There is an abyss among these concepts, and only by brainwashing and persistently using these terms you can convince people otherwise.

Ok, now to the point:

You get to the weakest example of intellectual property - computer interfaces, which ideally should be copied everywhere with no restrictions -, get an interface that 'looks like' (to me it seems very different) and tries to conclude that it is 'theft' by LeNovo? This is a long, long, very long shot, inappropriate for such a nice blog. I have been following your blog for a long time, but it is a pity that you buy all this 'intellectual property' ideology by the status quo holders.

Ha!!! Unlike communist Apple, Android is OPEN SOURCE so you have choices like Fire Fox. I can change the interface on my Fire Fox. (I like the Walnut ad on.) So instead of all black background how about white with black letters. Red would be sweet! Hey... I think I'll change the interface every week! :P
