Who's Killing TV? Blame Technology!

A whopping 2.5 million people have gone missing -- at least that's what major TV networks believe. ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox report that the number of people watching their shows has dropped that much since Spring last year. Network executives are scrambling to figure out where everybody went. I have a suggestion: BLAME TECHNOLOGY. No, really! HERE'S WHY.

Of course. It must be technology. It couldn't possibly be the inane, juvenile programs. It couldn't possibly be that way too many programs are, simply, boring? It couldn't possibly be that there is no programming worth spending $2,500 to watch?
It couldn't possibly be that the audiences are fed up with violence for violence's sake? It couldn't be that "innovation" today seems to stand for "let's put different actors in the same shows with slightly diffrent lines?"
Nah. It must be some machines doing it.

Mike,

Good article but the layout on the computerworld site is horrible. Trying to read it on the right side of the screen is distracting. They need to seriously fix that.

I'm with catmoves ,but I also think that in view of the fact that in the next few years there will be many more "older people"it would be wise on their part to come up with some programs of intrest to older audiences'

Who is Killing Television? The major TV networks have committed mass suicide with the complete lack of quality programing they are offering their viewers. For years they have justified their ill conceived, poorly made or some times offensive programing as "We are only giving what the people what they want" HOG WASH! If the viewer is only given a limited choice of garbage they will pick the best of the worst. It's like making a statement about a homeless person who eats out of the garbage, "Look, they are eating out of the garbage, they must like it." No! They are doing it because it's the only option given them. With their self righteous attitude they will make statements like " Well, if you don't like whats on you don't have to watch." Guess what? That's exactly what is happening. Those viewer who have found the television viewing choices to be so weak and anemic have left because "THEY DON'T LIKE IT." There is a generation of people who have been growing up without any knowledge of what truly good television programing is. It should be no surprise that they find all the latest technological devices available to them more stimulating and interesting than who wants to Survive, be the Next Top Model or American Idol. Is it the consumer who killed television? Nope. It's the corporate executive who have slit their own wrist.

Right on anyonymous! It's the major tv studios who are committing suicide. And by the way, has anybody noticed that more and more people are watching TVLand? At work everyone talks about it. People want the shows from years gone by where characters were interesting, shows were not dripping with violence and too much sex and fathers had authority and women were not treated as "things". I loved tv in the 60s 70s and early 80s, but then it just ran out of steam. Cable is not immune either. I used to love the SciFi channel, but now it is a monster-of-the-week channel and "pro" wrestling. Go figure.....
