A Mobile Life survey found that nearly a third of young adults (30%) in the UK would rather give up SEX AND ALCOHOL rather than their cell phones. A similar number said they wouldn't give up their mobile phones even for a million pounds (nearly $2 million). Nearly two thirds (63%) agreed that cell phones are "vital to maintaining their quality of life."

As a Brit, I'd have to say that this is bogus. Now, if you said the same thing about IM's like Windows Messenger, AOL or Myspace (which isn't technically an IM but you get the idea of which programs I'm on about) then I could believe it. When you said 'They wouldn't give them up for £1,000,000', is that on about giving up mobile phones for good, or just the specific model they have at the time? If the latter, then I think they were probably using it as an idiom rather than actually believing it.
You're taking this very seriously...
